In 2021, researchers estimated nearly 30 million people ages 12 years and older in the United States had alcohol use disorder (AUD). When you drink, the alcohol suppresses your brain’s production of a chemical called antidiuretic hormone, or ADH. ADH’s main effect is preventing you from losing too much water and urinating too much.
